5 Questions
This assessment has two parts. In Part I, you will read your completed pourquoi tale aloud in a Frog Festival. In Part II, you will answer some selected response questions about comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs and then use the planner you created in class to write an original pourquoi tale. Read the prompt carefully, use what you have learned about narratives to write your tale, and then use the checklist to review your tale.

Directions: Underline the correct comparative or superlative adjective or adverb to make the sentence correct.

Directions: You have been learning about pourquoi tales—fanciful stories that try to explain why animals look or act the way they do. Using the narrative planner you completed in class and your imagination, write your own pourquoi tale about one of the frogs you have been introduced to. This story will be part of the book you are creating about freaky frogs and will be shared with other students.

Write a pourquoi tale that answers the “why” question you chose in class (for example, “Why is the poison dart frog so colorful?”). Use the ideas on the narrative planner you have already completed to write your story.

REMEMBER: A well-written narrative:
• Establishes a situation and introduces the main characters
• Has a central problem and shows how the characters react to that problem
• Describes what characters do and say
• Describes what characters think and feel
• Uses words that help the reader imagine what is happening
• Has a solution or resolution that “wraps up” the story at the end
• Follows rules of writing (spelling, punctuation, and grammar)

Now, begin work on your narrative piece. Manage your time carefully so that you can:
1. Review your completed narrative planner.
2. Write your pourquoi tale.
3. Use the Narrative Writing Checklist to revise and edit your writing to be sure it meets all the criteria. Write your pourquoi tale on the lines that follow. Use extra paper if you need it.
