Writing an Opinion Essay

Task: You are going to put together an emergency preparedness kit for your family to use during a natural disaster. You have already determined the practical supplies you are going to include. Now you are going to think and write about the personal items you would include for entertainment and/or comfort.

Directions: Which two personal items would be best to include in your kit and why? Write an essay explaining which two personal items you would choose for your family emergency preparedness kit for entertainment and/or comfort. Be sure to explain your reasons for your choices. Other students will read your essay to help them decide which personal items they might pack in their own emergency preparedness kits. Remember that the kit cannot be too big or heavy and that it has to serve your entire family. The items you choose should function without electricity, as power may be out for some time after a natural disaster.

REMEMBER: A well-written opinion text:
• Gives the reader the information needed to understand the topic and clearly states the opinion
• Gives reasons for the opinion that are supported by facts and details
• Clearly connects the opinion and reasons using linking words and phrases
• Follows rules of writing (spelling, punctuation, and grammar)

Now, begin work on your essay. Manage your time carefully so that you can:
1. Plan your essay.
2. Draft your essay.
3. Use the Opinion Writing Checklist to be sure your essay meets all the criteria.
