Which One Doesn’t Belong: Shaded Parts (Warm Up)

1.

Which one doesn’t belong?

Partition the Strips

Your teacher will give you some paper strips. Each strip represents 1.

Fold each strip so that the parts represent one of the following fractions. Use one strip for each fraction.
  • halves
  • fourths
  • eighths
  • thirds
  • sixths
When you finish folding, trace your folding lines with a pencil and then label each part with the correct fraction.

Partition, Shade, Trade

  • Partition each rectangle into halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, and eighths. Then label each part with the correct fraction.
2.

Partition the strip into halves.

Mark the folds and then label each part with the correct fraction.

3.

Partition the strip into fourths.

Mark the folds and then label each part with the correct fraction.

4.

Partition the strip into eighths.

Mark the folds and then label each part with the correct fraction.

5.

Partition the strip into thirds.

Mark the folds and then label each part with the correct fraction.

6.

Partition the strip into sixths.

Mark the folds and then label each part with the correct fraction.

7.

Partition the rectangle into equal-sized parts. Shade one of the parts.

8.

Trade rectangles with a partner. If the whole rectangle is 1, what number represents the shaded part? Explain your reasoning.

Cool Down: Label the Parts
9.

Label each part with the correct fraction.

10.

Partition and shade the rectangle to show
