Task #1:

Go to the APEX website, and click on Elements of Literature
Click on THEME
Click on LEARN IT!
Complete the activity and make sure to SUBMIT!
 
Task #2:
Directions: R.L.6.1

Choose ONE constructed response you completed from Chapters 1-4. Revise and edit your response using the Constructed Response Rubric. 
Turn in published response.
Complete Ch. 5 Freak the Mighty Digital Notebook

LET'S REVIEW HOW TO IDENTIFY THE THEME OF A STORY
This week we are going to identify how different authors communicate their themes.

Take a look at the video below.  
Your goal is to:
identify the definition of theme and write it in your Reading notebook.
GLUE THEME handout into your READING notebook

Task #2:
Login into APEX 
Click on THEME
Click on TRY IT!
Complete TRY IT! and make sure to SUBMIT!

Task #3:
TO FIND THE THEME OF A STORY, COMPLETE A SUMMARY
The start to finding the theme is to summarize the text using Someone Wanted But So Then (SWBST). 

The actions of the characters help us understand the message the author is trying to make.  Check out the anchor chart below. 

CHECKLIST FOR CREATING A SUMMARY AND IDENTIFYING THE THEME
 

Watch the video called "Spellbound".  Then, read the example of a summary including the theme. 

Task #4:
- GLUE the SUMMARY handout into your READING notebook
Write a summary of the story, An Improbable Friend, below in your Reading notebook. 
Make sure to color code it like in the above example. 
Then, answer the questions that come after the passage. 
This must be completed by tomorrow when you meet with me.

Wednesday:
FINDING THE THEME OF A STORY AND COMPLETING A SUMMARY 
This week we are using our strategies to meet our goals  SWBAT: Someone Wanted But So Then to summarize and the moral/lesson to identify theme. 

Task #1:
 
 Watch the video called "Last Shot".  Down below, you will see an example of a summary including the theme.

 
Task #2:
Write a summary of the story below in your Reading notebook. Make sure to color code it like in the above example. This must be completed by tomorrow when you meet with me.

*As you read the text below, keep this focus question in mind.  Look for evidence from the text to help you answer the question. Write supporting evidence in your Reading Notebook to help you create your summary.
Summarize the story "The Gold-Giving Snake".  Be sure to include the theme of the passage.

Write a sumary of "The Gold-Giving Snake" and include the theme in the summary.

Let's review writing a summary and identifying theme one more time.  Take a minute to review the required items of your summary. 
Watch the video called "The Wishing Cranes".  Below, you will see an example of a summary including the theme.

Write a summary of Chapter 5 & 6 of Freak The Mighty in your Reading notebook. Make sure to color code it like in the above example. This must be completed by tomorrow when you meet with me.
