Read the passage below. Then, answer the question that follows:

I know what most people think when they see me. "She's too short." "There's no way she'll ever be able to be a pageant winner, let alone a model." Like I said though, that's what they think. They don't dare say that stuff to my face. Besides, I've heard it all before. And still, here I am. I'm 16-years old, and I go out on modeling job after modeling job. Sometimes, I get rejected. Actually, I get rejected quite a bit, but I also get plenty of jobs. I get so many that I have to turn down really good jobs. What most people seem to forget is that one of the most important aspects to modeling is attitude. I may only be 5' 4", but I've got enough attitude to stand on to make me at least 10-feet tall. Tall enough to see past what everyone says and what everyone thinks. Tall enough to see what lies before me in the future. Tall enough to see past it all, and every now and then, look down on the rest of the world when it tries to make me feel small. Why does the narrator of the passage talk about her past?

Read the passage below. Then, answer the question that follows:

Father likes to tell the story of the first time he took Mother to his favorite taqueria, La Milagrosa. "This place looks like a dump," Mother says. "How can you take me here?" "It is a dump," says Father. "That's how you can tell the tacos are good." "I mean how do you expect me to eat here?" Mother asks, eyeing the sawdust on the floor behind the butcher counter. "This place looks like it has bugs and mice." "Well, so does our house, but we eat there too, don't we?" Mother can think of no clever response. It's true; they live in the only neighborhood they can afford, where the rent is cheap. Mother tries not to look at the dirty floor of the taqueria. She orders a chile relleno taco, and Father orders a taco de cabeza and a rice-water drink. This author's books and stories are autobiographical, meaning they are based on her own life. What is one way she shows the reader what her father is like?

Read the passage below. Then, answer the question that follows:

Greg looked down at the girl sitting in the driver's seat. He stifled a laugh as he watched her pathetic attempt to fake tears and get out of the speeding ticket he was about to write out. He could guess that she would try to come up with some ridiculous excuse to explain her speed.
"I . . . I had to go to the bathroom," she exclaimed. "Really! See this huge coffee? I drank all of it to stay awake and I was trying to get to an exit to pee. Wouldn't you rather have me speeding at the wheel than sleeping?" Greg just shook his head and handed her a ticket. He couldn't believe how many times he had heard the "I have to pee" excuse. Couldn't people be more creative? From Greg's point of view, what is true about this girl?

Read the passage below. Then, answer the question that follows:

It all started with a Christmas gift. My mother made me a gorgeous mirror for my bedroom by designing the border herself with pieces of polished glass. She spent hours grouting the masterpiece and I was thrilled with it. When I returned to my tiny apartment that 26th, I had the dubious task of finding a spot for it in my cluttered room. Magazines, movies, candles, and various knick-knacks cascaded off haphazard shelves and gave my room the feeling of a large, claustrophobic trash heap. I hated living there. Not enough space! I complained constantly.

I dreamed about spacious, modern condominiums with soaring ceilings and endless, sparsely appointed bookshelves. That day, I got creative and pushed a few things around. I stacked one shelf on top of the other, pushed my little bureau next to it, and began reorganizing my books and treasures. And treasures they were! Gifts from friends, rummage sale finds, forgotten CDs . . . It was like the mall in my room! I carefully put my most highbrow books on the top shelf and arranged my candles, photos, and wine glasses in front of the books. Topping off the whole thing sat my trusty houseplant Ralph, whose leaves tumbled down to the floor in a pleasing green waterfall. In this passage, the author goes from a negative point of view to a positive one. How can we tell?

Read the passage below. Then, answer the question that follows:

I tried out for the school musical and did not get the part I wanted. I thought I gave a strong audition and I've been a part of the program all through high school. I thought that as a senior, I would have a good chance of a lead role because of all my past experience and hard work. I never skip practices and I always stay late to put away equipment. I joke around a lot with the choir teacher and thought we were friends. However, I guess I was wrong. I think the teacher probably just hates me or something. What other reason could she possibly have for not casting me? This student is upset about not receiving her chosen part, and this point of view affects her assessment of the situation. What statement is probably NOT true?

Read the passage below. Then, answer the question that follows:

Chicago Blues Festival
This year marked the twenty-seventh year of the annual Chicago Blues Festival. As in previous years, the music festival took place in Chicago’s Grant Park. Performers, young and old, shared their variations on the blues with large audiences against a backdrop of skyscrapers. Multiple stages were set up throughout the park, in addition to a large selection of food and beverage vendors.
As this year would have been the 100th birthday of blues legend Howlin’ Wolf, the festival was dedicated to him. Though Howlin’ Wolf was originally from Mississippi, his recording career was spent in Chicago. Alongside other legends such as Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, and Sonny Boy Williamson, Wolf is credited with developing the unique blues style that came to be known as Chicago Blues. Attendees were able to hear cover versions of Wolf’s songs and witness performances from many of Wolf’s former band mates. During the main stage performance on Friday night, Hubert Sumlin, a guitarist who played with Wolf for many years, sang the classic “Sittin’ on Top of the World.” The Chicago Blues Festival is just one of the many annual music festivals that take place in Chicago. Other festivals include the Chicago Gospel Music Festival, the Chicago Jazz Festival, and the Chicago Country Music Festival. Admission to these events is free to the public, and people of all ages are welcome. What is the author's purpose in writing this article?

Read the passage below. Then, answer the question that follows:

Health Matters Over 17% of American children and 65% of American adults are overweight. One look at these statistics should make it clear to anybody that the U.S. has a weight problem. When most people talk about weight, they focus on what everybody can see. They look at the size and shape of a person’s body. By doing this, they are not working to help overweight people lead healthier lives. They are insulting them. Such attacks on people's physical appearances do not make them want to live healthier lifestyles; rather, they often cause people to suffer from depression and low self-esteem. If you want to talk to somebody you love about his or her weight, don’t tell him or her that you don’t like the way his or her body looks. Tell that person that you care about him or her, and because you care, you want him or her to be as healthy as possible. Remember, all of our bodies are different shapes and sizes, and we shouldn’t assume that one shape or size is better than the others. Becoming healthy isn’t a matter of changing one’s shape or size, it is a matter of starting and practicing habits that help one’s body function in the best way possible. You Call That Music?
What happened to music? At what point did it stop being music and begin being garbage that could be pumped into a person’s ears? You might say, “What about R&B? There are people making good R&B music.” I say, “Name one person, just one, and it better not be Justin Timberlake.” I mean, seriously, are you going to tell me that “Cry Me a River” is as good of a song as Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me”? Timberlake’s voice is terrible, the song’s chorus is forgettable, and the beat sounds like it was made by a two-year-old. None of that can be said about “Somebody’s Watching Me.” "But wait," you say, "what about rock music?" And, once again, I respond, “Name one good rock band, and it better not be Fall Out Boy.” Are you going to tell me that “This Ain’t a Scene, it’s an Arms Race” is as good as Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet”? “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” is a classic rock song that has stood the test of time. The song has memorable lyrics that everybody can identify with. Unlike Fall Out Boy, the members of Bachman-Turner Overdrive have actually learned how to play their instruments and sing well, not just bang on their instruments and shout. Not to mention that, despite the fact that it's a hard-driving rock song, a person can dance to “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet.” Can you say any of that about “This Ain’t a Scene, it’s an Arms Race”? I didn’t think so.

Identify the author's purpose of the following passage: If you do one thing to help the environment, stop using disposable plastic. There is no reason to use plastic bottles or shopping bags. It is wasteful, unnecessary, and damaging to the environment. Reuse a metal or glass bottle and bring a canvas shopping bag to the store. Do you think reusable bottles are expensive? It is much less expensive to buy one $5-$10 bottle and use it for five years than to buy a $1 or $2 disposable plastic bottle every day and use it once. Canvas bags are only $1 at most grocery stores and they last forever.

Read the passage below. Then, answer the question that follows:

Slang is often defined as a misuse of proper language. Sometimes slang words are taboo or impolite. Other times, however, slang can be an effective way to communicate. Take, for example, the word “mob.” This word is the shortened version of the Latin word “mobile vulgus.” Among speakers of Latin, “mob” was probably easier to say and to write than “mobile vulgus.” Thus, over time, “mob” transformed from a slang word to an acceptable part of everyday speech. Indeed, the more effective a slang word, the better chance it has of being accepted in common speech. It should come as no surprise that many of the words in today’s dictionary were at one time considered slang words. Which of these best describes the author's attitude toward slang?

The only way to be truly independent and self-sufficient is to live alone. When you think about it, people spend most of their lives living under the same roof as family, friends, or loved ones. The result is that they often depend on family members or roommates to pay the bills, cook meals, and clean the house. The importance of learning to do these things for oneself cannot be stressed enough. As an opportunity for personal growth, living alone is an important step in becoming an adult. Which of these best describes the author's attitude toward guinea pigs?

Cruise ships might be a fun way to take a vacation, but they do far too much damage to the environment. The ships are harmful to marine life. The next time you want to take a vacation, try taking a train or plane to your destination instead. Read the last sentence of the paragraph. It is clear that the author wants readers to
