PRE-FILM JOURNAL

The book and film The Book Thief is told from the point of view of Death. It takes place in Germany during World War II.

Many texts we’ve read this year were told from a single person’s perspective. For example: "Raymond's Run", The Diary of Anne Frank, and “Flowers for Algernon”. Think about the advantages and disadvantages of telling a story through one character (a singular perspective).

Writing Prompt: Write a full paragraph (6+ sentences) that includes a topic sentence, body sentences (set up and explanation, set up and explanation), and a closing sentence. Provide one advantage and one disadvantage of having a singular perspective of a story. Give examples from a short story or a novel you have read this year or in the past.

POST-FILM JOURNAL

The Book Thief is told from the point of view of "Death" (personified).

Think about how this first person point of view (Death) impacted the film.

Writing prompt – Write a full paragraph (6+ sentences) that includes a topic sentence, body sentences (set up and explanation, set up and explanation), and a closing sentence. The response should focus on whether the perspective adds to OR takes away from the film.
