Class Period. Enter 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 depending on which class period you have biology.

Chapter 1.3 – Scientific Method –a way of thinking, questioning, and gathering evidence When you watched the United Streaming Video on the Scientific Method, you saw an experiment on whether light is required for plants to grow. The two students used the same materials to set up an experiment where seeds were exposed to light and no light. For seven days they observed the plants’ growth and recorded their measurements and observations. The seeds not exposed to light were less dense and pale yellowish in color.

  • Match the 7 bolded and underlined sets of words from the above text with the following terms in the questions 2 through 6. Terms are only used once for Questions 2 through 6.

4.

Independent variable (what you manipulate or change in the experiment):

[type the bolded term exactly from above that answers this question]

5.

Dependent variable (what is measured in the experiment):

[type the bolded term exactly from above that answers this question]

6.

Three constants (things that are the same in the experiment):

[type the 3 bolded terms exactly from above in the same order that answers this question; leave one space between each term]

Quantitative data (results that can be measured):

[If you don't know what "quantitative" data means, check your "Scientific Methods Helps" document given to you]

8.

Qualitative data (results that are based on opinion, judgment, or interpretation):

[If you don't know what "qualitative" data means, check your "Scientific Methods Helps" document given to you]

9.

Repeating your experiment can help verify that your results (data) are accurate.

10.

Which of these questions can not be answered by the scientific method?

11.

Give at least two ways that a hypothesis is different than a theory based on the video you watched. Use complete sentences. [This question has to be graded by me so it won't instanteous show whether you have the answer correct or not.]

Extra Credit: One of the steps after an experiment is completed is to publish and share the results with the public. There was an indication from the videos you have listened to and the materials that you have read that accomplishing this task of publication makes a person a "scientist." Make an argument for whether your teacher, Mrs. Egbert, could be considered a scientist or not.
