Solve It! You bought a mobile kit. You read on the package that the weight of the entire mobile is 40 oz. Each inch of the crossbar weighs 1 oz.

HINT

  • Start with 40 oz and divide it in half. That's 20 oz for each side of the mobile.

  • Now, on the left side, take 4 oz away from 20 oz to account for the mass of the 4 in of crossbar.

  • That leaves 16 oz for the mass of the orange shape.

  • Use a similar process to find the masses of the other shapes.

Take Note: Let a, b, and c be any real numbers.

Categorize each general example on the left based on the name of the property it expresses.

You may need to zoom out to see all of the items. You can also place each item from the left column by selecting it (click it) then selecting (clicking on) the category for it.

  • If a=b, then a\div c=b\div c.

  • If a=b and b=c, then a=c

  • If a=b, then a+c=b+c.

  • If a=b, then b=a.

  • a=a

  • If a=b, then you can replace a with b and vice versa.

  • Reflexive property of equality

  • Symmetric property of equality

  • Transitive property of equality

  • Substitution property of equality
