The Democratic Party held onto its belief in the old social order. In 1868, the presidential race, the Democrats ran a racist campaign. Their motto was: “This is a white man’s country. Let white men rule.” Their candidate lost to Ulysses S. Grant. As the nation grew and changed after the war, so did America’s two political parties. They no longer stand for the same ideals they once did. In fact, the first African American to be elected president is a Democrat.
