Question 1
1.
Predict if the mean is greater than, less than, or approximately equal to the median. Explain your reasoning.
The mean would be approximately equal to the median, because the data are roughly symmetric.
The mean would be very different from the median because there are many gaps in the data
You cannot calculate the mean or median from this data set
The mean would be much smaller than the median because the distribution is vast
Question 2
2.
Which measure of center—the mean or the median—better describes a typical value for the following distributions?
Identifying the mean here would best describe the typical value because the data is not clustered anywhere specifically
Identifying the median here would best describe the typical value because we are discussing people.
Since I think the values would be pretty close, either the mean or the median would describe a typical height pretty well.
Question 3
3.
Predict if the mean is greater than, less than, or approximately equal to the median. Explain your reasoning.
The median is higher than the mean because the exact center of the data is clustered around 25-30 years.
The mean would be lower than the median because there are no gaps in this data set and the data peaks at 5-10 years.
The mean would be higher than the median because this directly corrosponds to the MAD which is a relatively high number according to this data set.
The mean would be lower than the median, because even though a large fraction of the people at the dinner party are 40 or older, the ages of the people that span from 5 to 40 would bring the average age down.
Question 4
4.
Which measure of center—the mean or the median—better describes a typical value for the following distributions?
The median would better describe the center of the distribution of around 40–45 years old.
The mean would better desribe the center of the distribution of data because the typical age of someone at this party is 15-20.
The median would better desribe the center of the distribution of data because there is the most data centered at 25-30 years old.
The mean would be better to describe the center of the distribution becuase we are discussing people.
