Lesson Objective: Form and use the progressive (e.g., I was walking; I am walking; I will be walking) verb tenses.

You have learned about the present, past, and future verb tenses. Each of these tenses has a progressive form. The progressive form shows that an action is going on.

In this lesson, we are going to look at progressive forms of verbs: present progressive, past progressive, and future progressive.
Present Progressive Form
Present Progressive form shows ongoing action that is still happening when the words are written. To form the present progressive, use the helping verb am, is, or are with the -ing form of the main verb.
Some examples from our grammar book, page 92:

I am studying about different periods of art. (happening now)

Our teacher is explaining how an art movement begins. (happening now)

Beth and Tom are looking at a painting from the Impression art period. (happening now)

Past Progressive Form

The past progressive form shows ongoing action that was happening until another action occured. To form the past progressive, use the helping verb was or were with the -ing form of the main verb.
Some examples from our grammar book, page 93:

I was outlining a tree when a duck knocked over my easel. (was ongoing)

We were talking about about Monet's beautiful paintings when Dad came home. (was ongoing)

My friends were laughing so hard that no one helped me pick up my painting. (was ongoing)

Future Progressive Form

Future progressive form shows ongoing action that will happen in the future. To form the future progressive, use the helping verb will be with the -ing form of the main verb.
Some examples from our grammar book, page 93:

Later, we will be creating an Impressionist painting of a garden. (will be happening in the future)

Nick I will be using the Impressionist style for his landscape. (will be happening in the future)

Nick and Luna will be joining me at the pond tomorrow. (will be happening in the future)
