About this Formative

This Formative was created with the intent to be a tool for Art teachers who wish to teach the Elements of Art during the Holiday/Winter season.

Objectives:
  • Students will identify the Elements of Art in different artwork.
  • Students will use the Elements of Art to create their own artwork.
To use this formative:
Feel free to delete sections and questions, and/or modify and add your own questions!

Remember to:
  • Add an answer key to questions if you'd like to enable autograding
  • Adjust the number of points each question is worth
  • Adjust whether you want students to be able to earn partial credit on each question
  • Tag your own standards

What are the 7 Elements of Art?

Elements of Art are the visual "tools" that artists use to create an artwork.
Artists manipulate these elements, mix them in with principles of design and compose a piece of art. Not every work has every last one of these elements contained within it, but there are always at least two present.
For example, a sculptor, by default, has to have both form and space in a sculpture, because these elements are three-dimensional. They can also be made to appear in two-dimensional works through the use of perspective and shading.
