Mapping European Exploration

In this activity you will be using 1 map to represent European Exploration and Colonization. Pay careful attention to the instructions.

Use the maps to help you build your own Exploration map.

  1. Label Europe, China, Ottoman Empire, Africa, North and South America, India, Australia
  2. Label the Indian Ocean, Atlantic Ocean and Pacific OceanThe-
  3. Write center of Pre-Columbian Trade on the Indian Ocean
  4. By 1450 China was isolated. Find China – draw a wall around it and label it China=Isolated 1450s
  5. —African communities remained tied to traditional cultures - On Africa (label each and write traditional)—
  6. The Ottoman Empire controlled trade between Asia, the Middle east, and Europe – write controlled trade under the Ottoman Empire
  7. —Find Europe – draw a picture of ships leaving Europe- Late 1400’s Europeans developed technologies that made exploration and travel easier
  8. Color the key in the bottom for each country.
  9. Use the map and copy the major voyages of exploration under the following names: (France) Jacques Cartier, (Spain) Christopher Columbus, Hernan Cortes, Vasco da Gama, Hernando de Soto, Vasco Nunez de Balboa, Ferdinand Magellan, Fransciso Pizzaro; (England) Henry Hudson. Be sure to use the color that represents the country they sailed for!
  10. Use the Colonial Expansion map and to color the areas colonized by each European empire.
