Define the term Urbanisation. (2)


"This is the story about how the world will look in 2030 and beyond it is the story of how urbanization will change the surface of our planet and the biodiversity that is an essential part of it. Over the next 40 years earth will undergo the largest and fastest period of urban growth in human history by 2050".

(b) What sorts of opportunities does urbanisation have to offer? (6)


Refer to the map and satellite image below and answer the following questions:

What are the (a) physical and (b) social factors affecting the siting of Mbombela / Nelspruit (In Mpumalanga on the lowveld, 900m above sea level) ? Look at the map and aerial photograph below and pan around. (9)
(c) What is responsible for linear (rural) settlements in the area? (1)
(d) Describe the geology (zoom in to the rock structures to the NW of Nelspruit) of the area and explain how these structures weather. (3)
