End of Unit 3 Assessment, Part I Prompt: Drafting an Opinion Piece
Task: You have been learning about different perspectives on the American Revolution. Write a broadside from the Loyalist perspective that states whether colonists should support the American Revolution. Other colonists will read your writing to learn more about the Loyalist opinion and why they should support it.
Directions: Write a broadside from the Loyalist perspective that states an opinion on the American Revolution. Choose the most important reasons from your sources to support your opinion. Then write an opinion piece that is at least four paragraphs long. As you write, be sure to correctly form and use prepositional phrases and frequently confused words.
REMEMBER: A well-written opinion text: ■ Gives the reader the information needed to understand the topic and clearly states the focus ■ Gives reasons for the opinion that are supported by facts and details ■ Clearly connects the opinion and reasons using linking words and phrases ■ Follows rules of writing (spelling, punctuation, and grammar)
Now, begin work on your broadside. Manage your time carefully so that you can:1. Review your Opinion Writing Planning Graphic Organizer: End of Unit 3 Assessment before writing your draft. 2. Draft your broadside. 3. Use the Opinion Writing Checklist as you draft to be sure it meets all the criteria.
