Indiana Dailies Week 19

MONDAY

"On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away,"  is the Indiana state song.  It was written in 1897 by Paul Dresser with some help from his brother Ted.  The song is about Indiana's state river- the Wabash!  It was adopted as the state song in 1913.

TUESDAY

Parke County is known as the Covered Bridge Capital of the World.  At one time it had more than 50 covered bridges, but many have been destroyed.  Today there are 32 covered bridges in the county.  Some can still be used!  The oldest bridges were built in 1856.

WEDNESDAY

Snow and wind caused a lot of problems in sourthern and central Indiana in 1996.  wind gusts of 35 miles per hour knocked over trees and knocked out power lines.  More than 200,000 Hoosiers were without power for several days.  Huge snowdrifts made travel impossible on many roads.

THURSDAY

Levi and Katie Coffin of Fountain City secretly helped more than 2,000 slaves escape to freedome in the North before the Civil War.  People who supported slavery thought the Coffins were criminals.  The Coffins were part of the Underground Railroad, a group of people who helped escaped slaves.  Before he came to Indiana, Levi was a school teacher in North Carolina.
