Richard Gatling founded Gatling Gun Company in Indianapolis in 1862.  Richard's best-known invention was the rapid-fire gun, which was the model for the modern-day machine gun.  Many people criticized Gatling for inventing a terrible weapon.  Gatling offered his invention to the Union Army during the Civil War, but it was not approved until the war had ended.
