Mentored by filmmaker Evan Mascagni, Moniz-Reyome shares her family’s journey to retain sacred rituals and culture traditions and the ways in which her community is healing historical trauma with strength and dignity.

Did you know that Native Americans children were forced into white-run boarding schools? The goal of this was to strip the Native Americans of the cultural identities and force them to conform to the white-christian American way. Their languages, clothing styles, hair styles, prayers, and tribal celebrations were made illegal.

Do you do anything in your family to keep your traditions and culture alive? Give examples.

My example: I am Irish. Every year for St. Patrick's Day my family cooks traditional Irish meals. I am also German. My Grandma would speak German to us as little kids so we would pick up some of the language.
