“Joe, please watch the baby for me,” said Mom. “I have to go make dinner now, but I will be right in the next room. Call me if you need me.”
Joe stopped reading his book and looked over at his sister. The baby was on a soft blanket on the floor. She was reaching for a stuffed elephant, but it was a little too far away. Joe watched the baby try and try to get the toy. She did not give up.
Joe thought about what his father said. He said that sometimes you have to keep working hard to get what you want. Then Joe thought about how he would feel if he were the baby and never able to reach the toy.
Joe got up and moved the elephant a little closer to the baby. Now the baby might reach the toy if she tried hard. Joe was glad he had helped when his little sister grabbed the elephant and laughed. Joe went back to his reading, and the baby played with her toy.
