Answer the question using COMPLETE sentences and sk a question back to the teacher related to the question to pretend you are following the conversation. 
Also, try to give as much details as possible in your responses.
For example: If I say "Hi" I expect you to reply with a different greeting and ask "how are you?" "What's your name?" Etc...
If you don't know the exact way to say what you want, try describing it with words you DO know. 
Try to vary your vocabulary as much as possible, use different verbs, connectors, pronouns, etc... Do not simply repeat what the speaker says.
