Lily's Dream Comes True
Flashes of red, yelow, and blue appeared among the leaves of the rain forest. Whizzing along a zip wire 40 feet above the forest floor, Lily realized that the brigh colors were macaws! Dozen of them! Their loud birdcalls were unlike anything Lily had ever heard. She looked above the treetops to the sky overhead. It was alive with butterflies, flitting from branch to branch. Their wings were like jewels in the bright morning sun. The sight took Lily's breath away.
Maria, her tour guide, noticed her smiling. She explained, "The rain forest is home to a huge variety of animals, plants and insects. But there are many species of insects still waiting to be discovered."
Still waiting to be discovered? How could that be? How could there still be insects no one had seen? Lily decided to ask her mother about it later that night. But she also started thinking how wonderful it would be if she could discover something n one else had ever found. That would impress her mom!
Lily was on a work trip with her mother in the heart of a rain forest in Costa Rica. Lily's mother, Carmen, was a scientist. She studied bugs. Carmen needed to complete some research for a project she was working on. Lily was on school vacation, so she got to come along. As the zip line ride came to an end, Lily sighed. Although she was having fun, this trip was nothing like what she had imagined.
Before the trip, Lily had grand visions of helping her mother in her work. She imagined herself croughing behind a towering fern as she waited for a deadly snake to slither by. She pictured her mother following closely as Lily fearlessly cut a path for them through the brush. She daydreamed about thel ate night chats she and her mother would share by the light of a latern.
But those daydreams vanished soon after Lily and her mom got to Costa Rica. Carmen did not spend her days exploring the rain forest with Lily. Instead, Carmen set off early each morning with other scientists and did not return until dark. Lily had to stay with Maria, a tour guide. After a few days, Lily just wanted to go home.
On the last morning of their trip, Maria was not available. Lily had to tag along with her mother and the other scientests. They packed some supplies, including butterfly nets and journals, and set off. They walked for what felt like hours before the group stopped.
"Okay, I have to get to work now," Carmen told Lily. "You can explore, but please stay within sight."
Lily was excited. This is what she'd been waiting for! She grabbed her supplies and set off. Soon she was sitting on a large rock, surrounded by the most beautiful flowers she had ever seen. She took out her colored pencils and joural and began sketching.
And that was when it happened. A butterfly unlike and Lily had ever seen came to rest on the edge of Lily's journal. Lily held her breath. The butterfly unfoled its delicate wings to reveal a beautiful shade of blue. Slowly, Lily reached for her net and gently gathered the butterfly. She carefully took the net to her mother.
What happened next was like a dream come true. Lily had discovered a new species of butterfly! Her mother beamed with pride as the other scientists gazed at the creature. In an instant, Lily had become the star of the trip. The butterfly was even named after her: Lily's Swallowtail Blue. By the time the group started back to the hotel, Lily could hardly wait for the next adventure to begin.
