In 30 years, you are at home with your 6th grade son. He is having a really hard time with equivalent fractions. You don't remember how to work with fractions because it was sooooooo many years ago. When he asks for help on homework, you shrug and say, "Sorry, son... wish I could help, but I just can't. Maybe google it?"
In 30 years, you are at home with your 6th grade daughter. She is having a really hard time with equivalent fractions. You STILL remember how to do those because you used the 5 steps of the FNT process and the info is still in your brain! You tutor your daughter and she passes the fractions quiz!
You can bring your notes with you to take an "open-notes quiz" (like this one!)
During class, the teacher asks a question. You remember the answer was given in class yesterday and you wrote it down in your notes. You look for your notes, find the answer, raise your hand, and save the day.
During class, the teacher asks a question. You remember the answer was given in class yesterday and you wrote it down in your notes. You do/say nothing, assuming another student will look in their notes and answer the teacher. Awkward silence continues as no one speaks up...
Before a chapter test in math class, you can review all of your notes from the chapter to make sure you understand all skills and can find areas you need help on before the test.
You take notes in class on a loose sheet of paper during class and then push it to the side for your next class. The following week, there is an "open-notes quiz" on the subject but you cannot find your notes, so you do not have them with you for the quiz. You score 72%.
