Georgia has 20,000 miles of rivers and streams. The fourteen river basins of Georgia are the Altamaha, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Flint, Ochlockonee, Ocmulgee, Oconee, Ogeechee, Satilla, Savannah, Suwanee, St. Mary’s, Tallapoosa, and Tennessee. Georgia’s oldest and largest cities are located on or near a water source. Georgia rivers not only provide a habitat for fish, aquatic invertebrates, amphibians, and terrestrial fauna; but they also provide humans with drinking water, water for crops, a means of transportation, water supplies for communities, irrigation for agriculture, waterpower for power mills and machines, hydroelectricity, and recreational opportunities for Georgians.
