Writing a Final Argument

Objective: KWBAT construct a scientific argument using strong, relevant evidence that supports how different bacteria can have helpful or harmful effects on the human gut microbiome.
Part 1

Part 1: Do Now

Read the following statement from Senator Naismith, and then answer the question.

“Fecal transplants will make people sick. My evidence is that I think poop is disgusting, and everyone knows that poop does not contain anything healthy.” -- Senator Naismith
0

Is Senator Naismith making a convincing argument? Why or why not? Is something missing?

0

What would you tell Senator Naismith to convince him that Fecal Transplants are actually helpful?

0

How can you make this into a convincing argument?

Make Senator Naismith's arugment better!

Part 2

Part 2: Selecting a Subclaim and Related Evidence

So here we are, the final lesson of this unit! It’s time that we finish our argument for why fecal transplants are effective at curing patients infected with harmful bacteria. Remember that there are three subclaims that the Microbiome Research Institute provided.

You will select one of the subclaims to write about:

0

I want to write about Subclaim....

0

Explain: Why did you select that subclaim?

Sentence starter:
I selected subclaim ____ because...

0

Which piece(s) of evidence best supports the claim I want to write about? You can select more than one, but make sure that what you chose ACTUALLY supports your claim.

0

Explain: Why did you select that piece or pieces of evidence to support your subclaim?

Part 3

Part 3: Unit Focus Task

  • SUBCLAIM 1: Bacteria from the fecal transplant can fill up the space in the gut, which limits the food and space for invading harmful bacteria.
  • SUBCLAIM 2: Bacteria from the fecal transplant can help the patient's body produce immune cells that kill invading bacteria.
  • SUBCLAIM 3: Bacteria from the fecal transplant can help the patient's body produce mucus that protets the gut from invading bacteria.
6

Hint:
  • The subclaim that you chose is already your claim, copy it and paste it as your claim.
  • You already chose the evidence in question 5!
  • The assignment is out of 6 points (2 points for strong Claim, 2 points for strong Evidence, 2 points for strong Reasoning).
  • A strong argument will have between 3 and 4 sentences.
