In the morning, in the afternoon, at night, noon: this vocabulary helps to clarify the time of day when we are telling time. In this lesson, we will learn the vocabulary used to describe the time of day as well as review the vocabulary used to tell time.

Vocabulary: Time of the Day

?Qué hora es? By now we know how to say the time: Son las ocho y media, But this clock doesn't give me any indication if it's 8:30 in the morning, or 8:30 at night. What about this clock?
Thanks to the AM button, we know that it's 10:15 in the morning: Son las diez y cuarto de la mañana. In this lesson, we will learn the vocabulary used to clarify the time of day and review the vocabulary used when telling time.
Let's start by learning the phrases used to express the time of day - for example, in the morning, in the afternoon and at night.
To express 'in the morning,' we use de la mañana. ?Qué hora es? Son las siete y media de la mañana.
In the afternoon: de la tarde. ?Qué hora es? Es la una y cuarto de la tarde.
At night: de la noche. Son las nueve menos cuarto de la noche.
Notice that with each of these phrases we use the structure: 'de + la + time of day (mañana, tarde o noche).'

Now look at this clock. ?Qué hora es? Of course we can still say Son las doce. But since we don't have any reference as to what time of the day it is we don't know if it is midnight or noon. We can use the phrases mentioned earlier to express Son las doce de la tarde and Son las doce de la noche. We can also use two new words to express noon and midnight.
Noon: mediodía. Es mediodía. It's noon.
And midnight? Medianoche. Es medianoche.

Review Vocabulary: Telling Time

Now we are going to look at the vocabulary used to tell time. How do we respond to the question ?Qué hora es? Depending on the hour, we say Son las... or Es la...
Let's say it's 2:00 'on the dot.' We can say Son las dos en punto.
En punto: On the dot.
Y cuarto: Son las dos y cuarto.
Y media: Son las dos y media.
Menos cuarto: Son las tres menos cuarto.
These are some of the common words used when we want to tell time.
Do you remember the other question related to time? We ask this question when we don't want to know what time it is right now, but the time in which an activity or event occurs?
?A qué hora...?: 'At what time...' or 'What time do you...'
This question is met with the proper response:
A las... or A la..., depending on the hour.

Now we are going to spend a day in the life of Marco. We will be looking at his daily routine, but there will be some gaps, try to fill in what is missing.
