Build an Atom! (PhET simulation)

  1. Open this link in a new tab: https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/build-an-atom/latest/build-an-atom_en.html
  2. Select the "Atom" option.
  3. You are presented with a blank Bohr model of the atom. While we know this isn't accurate it is still a good and simple model for us to work with.
  4. To the right of "Net Charge" and "Mass Number" in yellow boxes on the right, click the green "+" button to show their windows.
  5. As you drag protons into the nucleus, notice the relationship between the number of protons and the element that is highlighted on the periodic table on the right.

Does the highlighted element change when you add or remove protons to the nucleus?
No
Yes
Try adding and removing electrons to the outer rings. Does the highlighted element change when you add or remove electrons?
No
Yes
Try adding and removing neutrons to the nucleus. Does the highlighted element change when you add or remove neutrons?
Yes
No
As you add protons, what happens to the charge (in the "net charge" window on the right)?
There are more "-" signs. The net charge is more negative / less positive.
There are more "+" signs. The net charge is more positive / less negative.
As you add protons, what happens to the mass number?
No change
It decreases
It increases
Now add electrons to the outer rings until you have the same number as protons. What happened to the charge?
There are more "-" signs. The net charge is more negative / less positive.
There are more "+" signs. The net charge is more positive / less negative.
As you add electrons to the outer rings, what happens to the mass number?
It decreases
It increases
No change
Now add more electrons than you have protons. What happened to the charge?
It became negative.
It became positive.
Add neutrons to the nucleus. Does the charge change?
Yes
No
As you add neutrons, does the mass change?
It decreases
No change
It increases
As you add protons and neutrons, does the mass change more, less or the same when adding a proton or adding a neutron?
Neutrons have more mass than protons
Protons and neutrons have about the same mass
Protons have more mass than neutrons
