R.I. 5.9
At over 29,000 feet above sea level, Mount Everest is Earth's highest mountain. It is located in the
Himalayan Mountains, along the border between China and Nepal.. The ancient Sanskrit name for the
mountain is, “Sagarmatha” which means, “Peak of Heaven”. Local people in the region call it,
"Deodungha" ("Holy Mountain") or Chomolungma, which means “Mother Goddess of the World.” In
1865 the Royal Geographical Society began referring to it as Mount Everest, in honor of Sir George
Everest. Prior to that, the English name for Sagarmatha was Peak XV (15).

What is the topic of Article 1 ?
Since Sir Edmund Hillary and Tensing Norgay first reached the summit of Mount Everest in 1953, over
5300 people have done the same. Those who wish to climb Everest will spend a lot of money to do so.
First, they need a permit to go up the mountain. Each permit costs $11,000. In addition to a permit,
climbers need bottled oxygen and high-altitude gear (that includes special tents, sleeping bags and
boots), medical care and food. Going to Everest can be more expensive than buying a new car. Climbers
can pay anything from $35,000 to more than $100,000.

What is the topic of Article 2 ?
Climbing Mount Everest is no easy task. Most expeditions to the summit take around two months and
the route is filled with danger. Simply breathing is a huge concern. The oxygen content in the mountain
air is only about 65% of that at sea level. As climbers ascend, the dangers grow. Violent storms near the
top can have wind speeds near 120 mph with temperatures dropping to 160 degrees below zero. Many
tragedies have also been caused by avalanche, exposure, fall (from the cliff), ice collapse, altitude
sickness, exhaustion and even earthquakes. Since 1922, over 300 people have died trying to climb
Mount Everest.
