In Indiana, the legislative branch is called the General Assembly. It has two houses. The Senate has 50 members. The House of Representatives has 100 members.

Thousands of people were brought from Africa to work as slaves in the early years of the United States. The French and early American settlers from the South brought slaves to Indiana. Slaves were forced to work long and hard. many slaves shared unique talents such as music and cooking that we still enjoy today.

In 1861, Indianapolis grocery store owner Gilbert Van camp discovered that pork and beans tasted better when they were mixed with tomato sauce. Gilbert opened a canning company to sell the tasty combination. The U.S. Army shipped Van Camp's pork and beans to the Union troops during the Civil War.
