2.

Which is faster and which is slower? What do you see and feel?

3.

The speed of the vibrations changes the sound in a different way from loudness (or amplitude). The speed of the vibrations is also refered to as the pitch.
  • What do you notice about the amplitude (height) of the wave?
  • What do you notice about how tightly packed the waves are as you change the pitch?

4.

Add the following diagram of FREQUENCY to your notes from earlier. Take a photo of your notes HERE.

5.

The graphs on the left below are of the motion of the ruler when analyzed by a motion detector. The graphs on the right are from the website you used above.

Compare how the graphs are similar below. The "stick" is your ruler.

Read the graph outloud - what is the x-axis, y-axis and what is it showing. Take turns with each person reading a graph outloud. (This should sound like, "The graph of the left is titled Stick Soft Push - it's x-axis is position (no units but since this is the ruler we might be thinking milimeters or mm.")

Use “What I See...” statements to describe patterns you see across the four graphs. Write one “What I see” comment for each pattern you notice.

6.

Describe in your own words what frequency of a vibration or wave is?

7.

What can you claim about all three of the graphs?

8.

Which has the highest frequency?

9.

Which has the lowest frequency?

10.

What is your mathematical evidence?

11.

Apply

Connect this back to the original intrument you brought to class (recorder, harmonica, guitar, violin, drum, improvised instrument). If you do not have an instrument, you can use this video.

How do you "see" frequency or pitch in your instument? Take a photo and annotate over it to describe your ideas.

Here is an example response.

12.

Reflect

Originally, you descibed loudness and pitch in everyday language. How would you describe them as a scientist would?

13.

In addition to the sound video, what else are you hoping to share from the menu during our last week of school? In other words, what else are you working on?

14.

Optional Extension:

Watch the video of the small music box. How does this relate to our learning today?

Here is another article that describes the difference between pitch and frequency. Share what you've learned.
