Assessment Directions:

This assessment is administered in Unit 2, Lessons 15–16.
Lesson 15:

1. Review the second learning target.

2. Share with students that they will use their writing organizer to write an informative paragraph about how a bird’s body part helps it to survive.

3. Remind students that all informative paragraphs have several important parts, but that today they will focus only on writing the focus statement and detail sentences.

4. Transition students back to their workspaces.

5. Invite students to read over their writing organizer to remember what their paragraph will be about.

6. After 1–2 minutes, distribute the Unit 2 Assessment: Focus Statement sheets.

7. Direct students’ attention to the Parts of an Informative Paragraph anchor chart and briefly review the focus statement’s job.

8. Turn and Talk:

“What is the big idea of YOUR paragraph?” (A bird’s body part helps it to survive.)

“Say the sentence you will write as your focus statement.”

9. Invite students to use the Unit 2 Assessment: Focus Statement sheet to write their focus statement.

10. Repeat this process for students to write their first and second detail sentences.
Lesson 16:

1. Review the first learning target.

2. Tell students that they will use their writing organizer to finish their informative paragraph about how a bird’s body part helps it to survive.

3. Remind students that today they will focus only on writing the second set of detail sentences and conclusion statement.

4. Transition students to their workspaces.

5. Invite students to review their pre-distributed writing organizer to remember what their paragraph is about.

6. After 1–2 minutes, direct students’ attention to the Parts of an Informative Paragraph anchor chart and follow the same process from Work Time B of Lesson 15 for students to write their detail sentences and conclusion statement using the Unit 2 Assessment: Detail Sentences #2 sheet and Unit 2 Assessment: Conclusion Statement sheet.

7. While students finish up their writing, circulate with students’ Focus Statement, Unit 2 Assessment: Focus Statement sheets, Unit 2 Assessment: Detail Sentences #1 sheets, and a stapler to make their writing into a booklet.
