Jimmy is a big hockey fan and noticed he can vary the speed of the puck when he shoots to score if he increases the length of his swing of the hockey stick. He believes by increasing the length of the swing of the hockey sticks he is increasing the amount of force that he applies to the puck.

He builds a hockey stick swinging machine to control and measure the swing. He raises the stick up each time at different heights which releases the stick. WIth the help of another student, they time the amount of time the puck takes to travel from a stop to 10 meters. He collected the following data for his project.

How is the length of swing related to the speed or velocity of the puck?
CFS:
  • accurately identify the change in the dependent variable (velocity)
  • accurately describes the relationship between length of swing (force), and velocity
  • accurately identifies the strongest sources of reasoning from the given data

Jimmy makes a claim that the mass of the puck would affect the acceleration of the puck.
Explain the relationship between an object’s motion dependending on the forces and the mass of the object.
CFS:
  • accurately identify the change in the dependent variable (velocity)
  • accurately describes the relationship between length of swing (force), mass, and velocity
  • accurately identifies the strongest sources of reasoning from the given data

Three chairs were rolling across a flat office floor. The blue and red chairs are the same mass, and they have more mass than the yellow chair. Each chair was hit by another chair, but not from the same direction. Use the information in the diagram to answer.

Which chair(s) experienced the strongest force when hit? How do you know?
