What is a blueprint and how does blueprinting, or visual modeling help scientists and engineers produce better physical models?

"A blue print is _____. They can be helpful because _____."

How does potential energy change based on the starting height of the egg drop pod?

"The higher an object the (more/less) PE there is"

Guided Notes:

Constraints/ Limitations: restriction, or something that prevents something from happening

Today we are going to design our first models for the egg drop projects. In the simulation we gathered data on how engineers could design cost effective and safe supply drops. In the Egg Drop Project Your goal still is to get the lowest damage percentage with the lowest cost.

Agenda:
1. Mini proposal:
a. Proposal: a plan or suggestion, especially a formal or written one, put forward for consideration or discussion by others.

2. Blueprint
b. a reproduction of a technical drawing, documenting an architecture or an engineering design

Design Rules:
  1. No kits or pre-made designs may be used. The structure must be the individual’s invention. (Tupperware is fine as its primary design was not to provide shock absorption.)
  2. If you use a parachute you have to make it
  3. If you want to pad your egg you have to create an original pillow
  4. Must be smaller than 1ft x 1ft x 1ft
  5. No propulsion systems will be allowed.
  6. The egg must be placed into the container on-camera.

Why is reducing mass and velocity important in the success of your pod?
CFS:
  • Accurately describes the relationship between force, mass and velocity in a collision
  • Student describes the impact and relationship of the chosen design decisions
"It is important to reduce mass and velocity because _____. By reducing the force, the pod will be (better/worse)"

0

How are you planning to reduce potential energy in your egg drop design?
CFS:
  • student accurately describes how energy transferred from one object to another
  • Student describes the impact and relationship of the chosen design decisions
"I a planning to reduce PE on my egg by _____."

Label the locations with the most and lease PE and KE

0

Why would reducing kinetic energy be important when designing your egg drop pod?
CFS:
  • student accurately describes how energy transferred from one object to another
  • Student describes the impact and relationship of the chosen design decisions
"It is important to reduce KE because the (more/less) KE the (more/less) likely the egg will break."

0

Draw a sketch or a design of how you imagine your egg drop project looking like.
Includes:
  • Title
  • Labels for each used item
  • Drawn to scale

What design decisions did you make to reduce kinetic energy and force of impact on your pod?
CFS:
  • student accurately describes how energy transferred from one object to another
  • Accurately describes the relationship between force, mass and velocity in a collision
  • Student describes the impact and relationship of the chosen design decisions
"My egg drop reduces KE and impact force because (describe how your design reduces KE)."

HINT: Think what is KE? How can you reduce KE (speed)
