18 Questions
Objective:
• Identify and determine the different types of reactions.
• Write balanced equations and predict products of chemical reactions.
Observations:
Recording of ALL observations is VERY important in this lab. Write VERY descriptive, observations of before, during, and after the reaction for all reactants and products.
Record all: color change, gas release, heat exchange, appearance, precipitate, phase change, etc…
Procedure:
Part A - only watch the first 50 seconds of the video

a) Using crucible tongs, hold the steel wool in the hottest part of burner flame until it starts to burn.

Place the steel wool in the aluminum pie pan.

b) Examine the steel before, during, and after it burns.

c) Solid iron reacts with the oxygen gas in the air to form iron (III) oxide.

d) Once the steel wool is cool enough, dispose in the garbage.

1.

Record Observations

Part B

a) Place an evaporating dish near the base of the burner.
b) Examine a piece of magnesium ribbon. Record your observations.
c) Using crucible tongs hold the sample in the burner flame until the magnesium starts to burn. Once the magnesium ribbon is lighted, place the magnesium ribbon in the evaporated dish. DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE FLAME. HOLD THE BURNING MAGNESIUM AWAY FROM YOU AND PUT THE BURING MAGNESIUM DIRECTLY OVER THE EVAPORATING DISH.
e) Dispose of the metal in the trash and wash the evaporating dish.
f) Magnesium metal reacts with the oxygen gas in the air.
2.

Record Observations

Part C
a) Place a small scoop of copper(II) carbonate in a clean, dry test tube. Note the appearance of the sample. Record your observations.
b) Using a test tube holder, heat the copper (II) carbonate strongly until there is a change.
c) Insert a burning wood splint into the mouth of the test tube. What happened to the flame?
d) If carbon dioxide gas (CO2) is present, it will put the flame out.
e) Note any change in the appearance of the residue in the test tube. Record your observations.
f) Solid copper (II) carbonate decomposes into solid copper (II) oxide and carbon dioxide gas.
A second way of testing for CO2 is to insert a burning wood split into the mouth of the test. If there is CO2 gas, the burning wood splint will be extinguished.
3.

Record Observations for heating Copper (II) carbonate

Part D
a) Stand a clean test tube in the test tube rack. Add about 5-10 mL of 6 M hydrochloric acid to the tube. CAUTION Handle acids with care.
b) Carefully drop a small piece of zinc metal (Zn) into the acid in the test tube. Observe and record your observations.
c) Using a test tube holder, invert a second test tube over the mouth of the test tube in which the reaction is taking place. See Figure below. Remove the inverted tube after about 30 seconds, keep it inverted, and quickly insert a burning wood splint into the mouthof the tube. Note the appearance and temperature of the substance in the reaction test tube. Record your observations.
4.

Record Observations

Part E
a) Add about 5 mL of 1 M copper(II) sulfate solution to a test tube.
b) Place mossy zinc in the solution. Leave the test tube in the test tube rack and make observations about 5 minutes later.
c) Decant (pour off) the solution into another test tube.
d) Record the appearance of the solution and the zinc before and after the reaction.
e) Aqueous copper (II) sulfate reacts with zinc metal.
putting zinc into copper (II) sulfate will cause the blue solution to become lighter and form a reddish precipitate on the the zinc metal
5.

Record observations

Part F
a) Add about 2 mL of 0.1 zinc sulfate to a clean test tube.
b) Add about 2 mL of 0.1 M sodium phosphate solution to the test tube.
c) Observe what happens and note any changes in the mixture.
d) Solutions of zinc sulfate and sodium phosphate are mixed.
both zinc sulfate and sodium phosphate are clear liquids, when mixed together they form a white precipitate
6.

Record Observations

Part G
a) Add a small spatula of solid sodium hydrogen carbonate to a test tube.
b) Then measure about 5 mL of acetic acid and add the acetic acid to the test tube.
c) Note any changes and touch the bottom of the test tube.
d) Solid sodium hydrogen carbonate reacts with acetic acid (aq).
mixing sodium hydrogen carbonate and acetic acid
7.
