Read the following paragraphs carefully, and then answer the questions that follow:

1- Macular degeneration is an age-related degenerative process of the macula, which is part of the retina. The macula is the are of the retina where you have the best visual acuity; that is where your 20/20 vision is found. It's a degenerative problem where the pigmented epithelium of the retina degenerates and the retina doesn't get enough nutrition, and it doesn't function properly so the vision of the patient gets foggy.

2- Probably, the most common test that is used to have patients monitor their own vision is called Amsler grid. An example on this self-monitor test is explained by Dr. Varr. "It's simply a piece of graph paper that we ask the patient to look at periodically. In addition, patients are actually monitored to check if they see any rapid changes. The problem with that test is that the patient has to do it on his/her own and to get patient compliance is sometimes difficult, and it is sometimes difficult for the patient to see a change. The brain compensates for it, and he/she tends to see it look the same no matter what is happening in the eye.
