For many Native American tribes, music is very important. Tribes use music in their ceremonies. They pass stories along through music, chants, and songs. One group of people that uses music is the Cherokee.
The Cherokee have chanted and sung for many reasons. In the past, sometimes they would ask the spirits for healing. Other times, they would sing for a good harvest. They would also thank the earth through their music. The Cherokee used their singing voices as well as instruments.

Traditionally, the Cherokee played many types of instruments. They played pipes, flutes, drums, and whistles. One popular instrument was a turtle shell rattle. All of their instruments were made of natural materials, such as wood or animal bones.

Today, many Cherokee musicians combine traditional Cherokee music with other types of musical styles like rock ‘n’ roll and jazz. They also use fiddles, guitars, and different types of drums. But one thing has not changed. Music is still important to many of the Cherokee members living today.
