Part 1: We will first be looking at John, our case study to center ourselves around why it is important to study the cardiovascular system. 

1) Read questions 1-4 below before watching the video to know what to look out for. 
2) We will be watching parts 1 and 2 of this body story on youtube (ends at 24:35).
3) You will answer the following questions on our case study in groups.

What does John Palmer do or not do, that increases his risk of heart attack?

What causes John to have a heart attack?

What symptoms of a heart attack does John experience?

If John is your patient what are your recommendations for him?

Part 2: We will now take a closer look into the blood vessels. You will be comparing the structure of arteries and veins. Then you will model them yourself by drawing them.

The image below shows how blood flows away and back to the heart. The blood flows through your arteries then through the cappilaries and then back to the heart through the viens. However, the blood that flows back to the heart is depleted of oxygen and nutrients. The blood is originally full of oxygen and nutrients when flowing through the arteries.What can you predict about what happens at the cappilaries?

This doesn't quite explain how blood get oxygen. We know that we breath to get oxygen but how does this get to our blood? The diagram below shows how blood is processed as it goes to different parts of the body. You will use this diagram to answer questions 6-8.

What do you suspect happens at the cappilaries near the lungs?

You can see that the viens pump to a certain part of the heart and the the arteries get blood from a certian part of the heart. Distinguish which goes with which.

Now from the left atrium, you will sequence the steps for blood flow to happen.

left atrium pumps blood to arteries
blood flows through arteries to lower and upper extremities of the body
blood is depeleted of oxygen and nutrients at cappillaries in lower and upper extremities of the body
blood is then pumped from the right atrium through the viens to the lungs
depeleted blood flows back to the right atrium of the heart through the veins
then the blood floows through the pulmanary viens back to the left atrium of the heart and the process repeats
at the cappillaries at the lungs, the blood is replensished with oxygen
