Do you remember that Indiana's motto is the "Crossroads of America?"  That's because many transportation routes run through the state.  Indiana has more miles of interstate highways than any other state.  It also has on of the greatest concentrations of railroad tracks in the country.  All major railroad lines to Chicago from the eastern U.S. run through Indiana.

Why is Indiana sometimes called the Crossroads of America?

The Tri-State tornado blew through Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri in 1925.  Its path stretched for 219 miles from Ellinton, Missouri to Petersburg, Indiana.  The tornado killed 74 people.  It was one of the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history.

Orville Redenbacher experimented with thousands of types of corn, looking for one which would pop up lighter and fluffier than a typical popcorn.  By the 1960s he was selling popcirn out of the back of his car, and in 1971 he introduced Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn, which is now one of the nation's top-selling microwave popcorns.  Orville was born in 1907 in Brazil, Indiana.
