Assessment Directions:

The assessment is administered in Unit 1, Week 3, Lessons 3 and 5.

Part I:

1. Read aloud pages 5–9 of The Dog that Dug for Dinosaurs.

2. Point out the Unit 1 Assessment, Part I: Answering Questions about a Literary Text and pencils already at students’ workspaces.

3. Read the questions and possible answers for Part I aloud.

4. Reread pages 5–9 of The Dog that Dug for Dinosaurs.

5. Focus students back on the assessment and reread question #1 aloud.

6. Invite students to circle the correct answer.

7. Repeat steps 5–6 with question #2.

8. Tell students you will now read the rest of the story and then they will retell the beginning, middle, and end.

9. Read aloud pages 5–15 of The Dog that Dug for Dinosaurs.

10. Distribute copies of The Dog that Dug for Dinosaurs to each student.

11. Focus students on the Beginning, Middle, and End Graphic Organizer on the assessment and read the directions aloud.

12. Invite students to complete the graphic organizer independently.

13. After 10–12 minutes, refocus whole group and collect students’ assessments.

Part II:

1. Point out the Unit 1 Assessment, Part II: Answering Questions about a Literary Text, pencils, and copies of The Dog that Dug for Dinosaurs already at students’ workspaces.

2. Read aloud the directions for the selected responses questions. Tell students you will read each question aloud and then they will circle the correct answer. Remind them of the strategies/steps they learned to answer these kinds of questions. Also, remind students to refer to their copy of the text.

3. Read each question aloud and give students 1–2 minutes to answer before moving on to the next question.

4. Collect students’ assessments.
