Feedback Pre-test Instructions:

One of the topics you will learn about this trimester is feedback loops. The concept of feedback loops is important because it helps you understand the way many parts of a system work together. You will continue to learn about feedback in nearly every science class you take. Since you may already know some information about feedback, we have designed this pre-test to help us determine where you are starting.

On this "test" you will earn 100% for completing all 10 questions, it doesn't matter if you choose the correct answer. If you are not sure about a question, "I don't know yet," is an answer choice that you would select.

DO NOT LOOK UP ANSWERS ON THE INTERNET....I want to know what you know, not what the internet knows..

Try your best, and don't be afraid to say "I don't know yet." 😄

(level 1)
The image above is an example of a...
A positive feedback loop
A negative feedback loop
I don't know yet
Which statement about carbon dioxide is true? (level 2)
Oceans absorb carbon dioxide much faster than humans add it to the atmosphere.
Burning fossil fuels increases atmospheric carbon dioxide levels
Human actions have little effect on the amount of carbon in circulation.
Global temperatures depend on the total amount of carbon on earth
I don't know yet
The main influence on Earth’s climate over geologic time is: (level 2)
Plate tectonics
Human activity
The water cycle
Milankovitch cycles
I don't know yet
Which is an example of a positive feedback loop? (level 2)
Decreasing temperature ➜increase in ice cover ➜increase in reflection of sunlight ➜decrease in temperature
Decreasing temperature ➜decrease in plant cover ➜decrease in absorption of carbon dioxide ➜increase in temperature
Increasing temperature ➜increase in plant cover ➜increase in absorption of carbon dioxide ➜decrease in temperature
Increasing temperature ➜increase in weathering and erosion ➜increase in marine shell growth ➜decrease in temperature
I don't know yet
The geologic record shows that over long periods of time, Earth’s climate is dominated by: (level 1)
Warming conditions
Cooling conditions
Positive climate feedback
Negative climate feedback
I don't know yet
Under the influence of positive climatic feedback conditions, relatively cool global climate conditions become: (level 2)
Cooler
Warmer
Less stable
More stable
I don't know yet
A group of scientists is studying climate change. Which of the following are they least likely to be studying? (level 2)
Ice cores
Coal deposits
Sunspot records
Oxygen isotopes
I'm don't know yet
Carbon is recycled through food chains and the inorganic parts of the carbon cycle. However, energy flows in only one direction through a food chain and is not recycled. This is because: (level 2)
Cellular processes convert chemical energy into new matter
Decomposers transfer energy to space before it can be reused
Chemical energy is converted to heat at each step in a food chain
Chemical energy cannot be converted into any other form of energy
I don't know yet.
Since we started going over feedback loops last trimester....how would you rate how comfortable you are with this concept?
Excellent....I could teach the class
Very good....I could help other students
Good.....I understand it, but I couldn't help others
I understand parts of it
Not good....I need help
