Click the pause button first. Place the skater on the ramp at a height of 4 meters. Look at the bar graph. What type of energy does the skater start with before it starts moving?
Kinetic
Potential
Thermal
The skater should still be on the ramp at 4 meters. Now click play. Watch the bar graphs. What happens to the potential energy as the skater moves downhill (increase, decrease, stays the same)?
Increase
Decrease
Stay the same
Watch the bar graphs. What type of energy does the skater gain as it moves down the hill?
Kinetic
Potential
Thermal
Look at the bar graphs. At what location does the skater have the most Potential Energy (top, middle, or bottom)?
Top
Middle
Bottom
Look at the bar graphs. At what location does the skater have the least Potential Energy (top, middle, or bottom)?
Top
Middle
Bottom
At what location does the skater have the most Kinetic Energy (top, middle, or bottom)?
Top
Middle
Bottom
At what location does the skater have the least Kinetic Energy (top, middle, or bottom)?
Top
Middle
Bottom
Change the start height of the skater and watch how it affects how high the skater goes on the other side.

In other words, start the skater at 2 meters and watch how high it goes on the other side.
Then start the skater at 4 meters and watch how high it goes on the other side.
Then start the skater at 6 meters and watch how high it goes on the other side.

Is the ending height always the same, more than, or less than the starting height?
The ending height is always the same as the starting height.
The ending height is always greater than the starting height.
The ending height is always less than the starting height.
Compare what happens to both types of energy as the skater goes down the hill and up the hill.
At the top of the hill, the skater has only kinetic energy and no gravitational potential energy. As it moves down the ramp, the energy becomes kinetic. At the bottom, the energy is all gravitational potential energy.
There is only kinetic energy throughout the motion
Kinetic and gravitational potential energy remain unchanged throughout the skater's motion.
At the top of the hill, the skater has only gravitational potential energy and no kinetic. As it moves down the ramp, the energy becomes kinetic. At the bottom, the energy is all kinetic.
There is only gravitational potential energy throughout the motion.
Even though the type of energy changes, the total mechanical energy of the system ____.
Increases
Decreases
Stays the same
