KWBAT analyze and interpret evidence to apply what they know about protein molecules

Part 1: Do Now

1.

Why do these siblings have different traits for the feature of eye color?

Use the terms: protein, gene, trait, structure, instruction

2.

Which claim about genes’ role in building proteins best fits considering the hamburger modeling activity you completed yesterday?

3.

The fruit flies above have different eye colors.

Connect:

What does it mean when two flies of the same family have different eye colors?
What does this have to do with proteins? Explain.

Sentence Starter:
When two flies of the same family have different eye colors, this means....

4.

Reflect: What do you think causes different organisms to make different proteins?

Sentence Starter:
What causes different organisms to make different proteins is...

5.

Which of the following best explains the connection between genes and traits?

6.

Three snakes have different parents and were raised in different environments. They all have the same proteins for stripe pattern in their cells. What can we say about their stripe patterns?

Part 2: Intro to Mutations

7.

A mutation is a random change to a gene version. This means that...

8.

What caused Susie to have a different trait than her parents?

9.

What type of effect do you think mutations have on a person?

10.

What are some mutations you have heard about?

Part 3: Mutations Predictions and Tests

Link to Sim: https://learning.amplify.com/traitsandreproduction/#/

For this section, you will need to use the Amplify sim to complete the scavenger hunt.

Heads up: Some of them will be difficult but don't give up!
  1. Launch the Traits and Reproduction Sim
  2. Select one female spider and one male spider.
  3. Drag the female spider on top of the male spider.
  4. Click on CREATE REPRODUCTIVE CELLS.
  5. Click on MUTATE
  6. Click on the Feature that has a red dot underneath it (example on the left side).
  7. Drag one of the mutated cells on top of a non-mutated cell.

PART A:

ONE MUTATED GENE COPY AND ONE NON-MUTATED GENE COPY

11.

Step 1 - Make a prediction.
Step 2 - Test the prediction.

12.

Did mutating the cells affect all of the spider's traits, a few, or one?

Explain what happened when you mutated the spiders cells.

PART B:

BOTH GENES MUST BE MUTATED

13.

Predict:
Think about what mutations are and predict the structure of the proteins.

What will happen to the gene versions of a fully mutated cell? (this means that both gene versions will have a mutated gene like the image below).

14.

OPTIONAL -
Now, this is the challenging part.

Create offspring with a shiny body color OR all green body color.

You must get ALL offspring to be the same shiny color OR all to have yellow green/green color.

Hint: You have to mutate the body color many, many times.
