Objective: SWBAT identify that some materials can absorb light while others cannot, and conclude that ultraviolet light can cause skin cancer.

Do Now:

0

Label the wavelength and the amplitude of each wave.

0

Explain which wave would appear brighter.

"I think wave (1 or 2) will appear brighter because ... "

Guided Notes:

Earth’s atmosphere can absorb some wavelengths of light emitted from the sun. The diagram below shows which types of light are absorbed in the atmosphere, and which types of light travel through the atmosphere and reach Earth’s surface.

Use this diagram to help you think about which types of light could be causing the damage that can lead to skin cancer.

0

From the types of light that reach Earth’s surface, which do you think could be causing skin cancer? Explain your reasoning.
CFS:
  • Accurately identifies the type of light reactions that cause changes in objects
  • Accurately describes the relationship between wave properties and outcomes

Practice:

Amplify Science:
Unit 6: Light Waves
Chapter 2: Light as a wave

Goal:
  • Show what happens to genetic material when it is exposed to different types of light from the sun.
Do:
Use the Light Waves Simulation to test the effects of different types of light from the sun on genetic material. Refer to the image above to see which types of light from the sun reach Earth’s surface. Turn Show Energy on.
  • Drag GENETIC MATERIAL to a platform in the testing area.
  • Set the light source to Custom and turn on the light.
  • Use the slider to change the wavelength/type of light the laser emits. Test:
  • Ultraviolet (UV)
  • Visible (any color)
  • Infrared (IR)
  • Microwave
  • Radio

  • Record the results on your Modeling Tool: Investigating Light’s Effect on Genetic Material sheet.
  • If the type of light has an effect on genetic material, record it.
  • If the type of light has no effect on genetic material, record it.

Based on the notes above and your results from the SIM, explain what types of light could cause skin cancer?
CFS:
  • Accurately identifies the type of light reactions that cause changes in objects
"Based on the results from the simulation I think that (predict light type) can cause cancer because ... "

Exit Ticket:

2

How would you experience these two waves? (think: look at wavelength and amplitude)
CFS:
  • Accurately identifies the differences in light sources
  • Accurately describes the relationship between wave properties and outcomes

Can a lightbulb cause skin cancer?
