For a final project, you get to choose any natural disaster and create a “Public Service Announcement” to educate others about it. This first step is due Wednesday, Jan 27th.
Your final project can take on whatever form you’d like (a video, a slideshow, a poster….). But, it must include the following things:
* A clear message: What actions should people take to prevent, prepare for or survive the disaster?
* An audience and purpose: Who do you want to educate? How will you persuade them to act?
* Accurate research. At least 3 sources from science, government or trusted news organizations.
* I will also ask you to complete out a short "author's note" to explain your project.
TO GET STARTED, complete this survey. If you change your mind, that's okay. Just come back and edit it so that I can support you.
Choose a natural disaster to focus on. What do you want to learn more about or teach others about?
If you said "other" write the natural disaster you plan to focus on here. Otherwise, leave it blank.
Choose your project. What will you create? If you aren't sure, check out some examples here first.
Are you working alone or with partner(s)?
If you have a partner, write their name(s) below. Groups may not be larger than 3.
Choose an audience & purpose. This will help your PSA be specific and effective.
How will you convince people to care about your issue?
Sum it up! Write a statement of what you plan to create. This can be a brainstorm for now. Example: "I want to create a stop-motion animated video that uses humor to convince families to prepare for earthquakes. I might try to make a parody of the disaster film San Andreas, with the Rock as the spokesperson for earthquake preparedness."
Great! Final step. On Friday, we'll be doing some research. Think about what you will need to know to successfully make your PSA. Below, write three questions you could type into a google search to get started. Examples: "What should go in an earthquake kit?" "Where in the US are severe earthquakes a problem?"
