Objective: KWBAT explain the impact of human activity on water availability.
Warm Up - East Ferris’s Water Shortage
f
Welcome back, water engineers. Yesterday, we learned about ways that humans can impact how much freshwater is available to use by polluting it or using too much. Today, we’re going to use those ideas to explain what could be happening in East Ferris.
Let’s start by analyzing some new information from Mayor McKnight and see what we notice!
West Ferris gets most of its freshwater from rain they collect in a surface reservoir.
East Ferris gets freshwater from the groundwater reservoir.

A reminder how groundwater reservoirs work
An example of a surface reservoir

When it rains, is water going into the area or going out of the area?
When people use water, is water going into the area or going out of the area?
What happens to the amount of water when people use water?
MAKE A PREDICTION: What will happen to the water in the reservoir if people use more water, so that the flow out becomes greater than the flow in - will it increase or decrease?
Watch the video on the board and answer the question below.
Did the amount of total water in the reservoir increase or decrease?
What happens to the amount of water when people use more water than the amount of water that flows into the reservoir?
Reservoirs on Ferris Island

East Ferris: Water Source - Where does the town’s water come from?
8. East Ferris: Rainfall - does the town get a lot or a small amount of rain?
East Ferris: Rainfall Change - has rain fall over the years increased, decreased, or mostly stayed the same?
East Ferris: Population - has the population increased, decreased, or mostly stayed the same?
Why could East Ferris be running out of water? Think about the amount of water going into East Ferris and going out of East Ferris.
Claim:
East Ferris could be running out of water because more water is going _____________ (into or out of) East Ferris than water going _____________ (into or out of) East Ferris.
Evidence: Use the rain data table and the population growth cart to support your answer.
Sentence starters:
In the rain data, it shows ____________
In the population graph, it shows _____________
Reasoning (Explanation): Why is East Ferris running out of water?
Sentence starters: East ferris is running out of water because ________________

Why is West Ferris not running out of water? Think about the amount of water going into West Ferris and going out of West Ferris.

The Earth is a system. A system has multiple parts that interact with one another in different ways.
The biosphere is all the living things on Earth. This includes people.
The hydrosphere is all of the liquid water and ice on Earth.
The biosphere and the hydrosphere interact when living things, including people, use water.
Which of the following gives an example of the biosphere and the hydrosphere interacting? Select all that apply.
