What starts the process of eutrophication?

Because of the bacteria in the water, what is used up when decomposition occurs?

What happens when all of the oxygen is used up in the water?

How can we prevent eutrophication?

Background:

Some of today’s more pressing enviornmental problems can be quite complicated and difficult for the average person to understand. Failure to accurately understand them may impact both how and when the problem gets attention. TV commercials, billboards, pamphlets, radio ads, and flyers have all proven helpful in this regard (EDUCATING THE PUBLIC!!!)

Some thoughts:

A. You may target a young audience or an older auidence.

B. You are not graded upon your art skills, just your accuracy, thouroughness, and creativity.

C. The comic will be six panels to cover the subject and its possible resolution.

D. You may use many different sources for ideas and/or background information.

E. You must mention or illustrate: nitrogen/nitrates, phosphorous/phosphates, nutrients, eutrophication, phytoplankton, alge, dead zones, DO (dissolved oxygen), and decompoition

The six steps of eutrophication are

1)Addition of eutrophication sources (fertilizers, detergents, wastewater)

2) Runoff into bodies of water

3) Algal bloom from excess nutrients

4) Plants underneath algal bloom die from lack of photosynthesis

5) Algae uses up all nutrients and dies

6) Bacteria decomposes dead aquatic plants, creating a hypoxic zone (lack of O2) killing aquatic organisms
