Connection: In this chapter, Ishmael is normal 12 year old boy, and suddenly, his life is completley transformed into warzone. Can you think of an instance in your own life experiences that this is similar to this?

Comprehension: Why do the refugees passing through Ishmael’s town refuse the shelter that was offer to them by the civilians?

Connection: On page 5, Ishmael describes the children coming from warzones "jumped at the sound of chopping wood or stones land[ing] on tin roofs flung by children hunting birds with slingshots." Why do you think the children were jumping at these sounds?
