We can use subtraction to find the change in y and the change in x (slope) of a line when we don't have a graph at all. The formula is:
The little 1's and 2's don't have a numerical value, but they name the points for us so we can put the correct x's and y's in the formula.
Once we have the slope, we can use it and one of the points (it doesn't matter which) to find the equation the way we did in the last section of this unit.
