Cities are governed by a mayor and group of people called a city council. Towns are governed by a board of trustees.

Indiana is served by some of the best waterways in the world. Ports along Lake Michigan allow freight to be easily moved to Indiana's many northern factories. The Ohio River is the main waterway in southern Indiana. River barges travel up and down the river to the many ports in the area.

Simon Pokagon was chief of the Potawatomi Indians. In 1844, when he was 14, Simon was sent to Notre Dame Academy. He learned to speak many lanugages while he was there.
