A strong AP essay is well-structured and the line of reasoning in your Thesis should outline each of your body paragraphs.

For the Period 3 DBQ prompt, your essay could have organized in two ways:
  1. A Qualifying Thesis would have 1 body paragraph to support ways in which the Revolutionary principles were upheld, and 1 body paragraph to support ways in which the Revolutionary principles were not upheld
  2. Your Thesis could have also determined whether or not Revolutionary principles were upheld -- in this case, you would typically write one body paragraph for each Revolutionary principle you chose to discuss

A principle is a guiding truth or value that serves as the foundation for a system. In the Period 3 DBQ, you were asked to identify at least two principles of the American Revolution.

  1. Box the topic.
  2. Highlight and annotate the prompt as needed.
  3. Rephrase the question in your own words.

Contextualize the Topic: What is the Reconstruction in your own words?

Avoid using the Google. Tell the hiSTORY (and herSTORY) by explaining this key term as if you were talking to a younger sibling.

1

Use the scale to evaluate the Reconstruction era using your expert historical knowledge.

1

Now make sure you can earn the Outside Information point by brainstorm two potential key terms that you can describe and explain the surrounding historical situation in your own words.

Work smarter not harder, juniors!
