Verbs with reflexive pronouns:
If the subject and object of a verb are the same, a reflexive pronoun can be used to show that the subject acts upon itself (I wash my face, you shave your face, etc.)
examples using lavarse:
yo me lavo •Like direct object pronouns, reflexive pronouns can go:
te lavas 1: before a conjugated verb
él, ella usted se lava 2: after and attached to an infinitive
nosotros nos lavamos The meaning is the same for both.
vosotros os laváis Example: I am going to wash my face.
ellos(as), uds. se lavan Me voy a lavar la cara.
Voy a lavarme la cara.
•When you use a reflexive pronoun use el, la, los or las before the part of the body or clothing to say “mine” or “your.”
ex: Yo voy a lavarme la cara – I’m going to wash my face.
To figure out if an action is reflexive ask yourself: Who is doing the action? Who is getting the action? If the answer to both questions is the same person then the action is reflexive and you need the reflexive pronoun. If the answer to the questions is 2 different people, the action is not reflexive and you do not use the reflexive pronoun.
examples: Paula se lava las manos. = Paula washes her own hands. Paula does the washing, and Paula's hands are washed --> this is a reflexive action.
Paula lava las manos de su hijo. = Paula washes her son's hands. Paula does the washing, and her son's hands are washed --> This is NOT a reflexive action.
